Book On The Way
Written by Dr. Mel
Thursday, 28 August 2008

It took nearly two years, but I think that I have finished my book on Connecticut climate.....what a task! I'll be sharing more about that with you, but the important thing is that I can get back to this website, and help those as much as possible with myeloma.

I have had plenty of bumps along the way, but this fall season marks my 12th anniversary since diagnosis, We keep going, don't we?

Lately, I have noticed my immune system to be a little less than before. I am more vulnerable to colds, and my back is still a serious problem. I keep shrinking. But, I now walk two miles each day. I just can't stop. Stay tuned.

The Cows Still Moooove Me

It has been a busy 12 months.....I began an additional project - writing a new weather book which will be called the Connecticut Weather Almanac, or something very close to that. What an exhausting project, but I am now more than halfway there. It will be published later this year. Yet, I haven't done much on Sketches, the year was very difficult. I lost several good friends to this disease, and the weather book became an escape from the realities of dealing with an incureable disease. In addition, I have had a series of minor setbacks which appears to be under control. Early this morning, is the first time in months that I have been able to sit down to share some thoughts - trying to break the ice with you, once again. There is more reason than ever to remain optimistic.

Man finds inspiration in friend's own battle
Written by Jeff Bailey
Tuesday, 11 September 2007
NEW MILFORD -- Cancer stormed into Wayne Poulter's life a decade ago like an off-the-radar tornado, the diagnosis ripping him apart.

Searching for a forecast of what might lie ahead, this weekend skier and runner was steered to the state's high-profile meteorologist Dr. Mel Goldstein, his former Western Connecticut State University professor who a year earlier discovered he would have to weather the same formidable, incurable foe.

"It took me 30 days just to say multiple myeloma, never mind spell it,'' Poulter said.

To this day, Poulter contends it was Goldstein's optimism mixed with realistic expectations that lowered his anxiety.

Chapter 12: His Appointed Rounds
Written by Dr. Mel
Wednesday, 27 June 2007

It was Fran Delaney night on that second Tuesday in June, 2007.  That particular Cruise Night in Norwich, Ct. was dedicated to Fran who was quite the car enthusiast. He was proud of his ’57 Chevy and his ’67 Chevelle S 96 Super Sport. At one time he even had his own race car. He loved life and was loved by everyone who was close to him. He was also somebody who fought a tough battle with multiple myeloma. Yet, through his myeloma years, he always held onto his optimism and kindness, and he would give you the shirt off his back, or at least his jacket.
