NEW MILFORD -- Cancer stormed into Wayne Poulter's life a decade ago like an off-the-radar tornado, the diagnosis ripping him apart. Searching for a forecast of what might lie ahead, this weekend skier and runner was steered to the state's high-profile meteorologist Dr. Mel Goldstein, his former Western Connecticut State University professor who a year earlier discovered he would have to weather the same formidable, incurable foe. "It took me 30 days just to say multiple myeloma, never mind spell it,'' Poulter said.
